Save-the-dates, Invitations, and Wedding Programs: Harry Potter
Although the Harry Potter series isn’t a romantic love story, it is one of my favorites and seeing the movies is something that Justin and I make a big deal out of; therefore, it made sense to use something from the story as inspiration for our fairytale day.
Our save-the-dates were inspired by the Harry Potter’s acceptance to Hogwarts, as we used parchment and a letter format to invite our guests to save the date for our wedding. We sealed the envelopes with red “D” monogrammed wax (Justin sealed and stamped the envelopes himself).
We promised our guests would be sent their invitations “by owl,” and since real owls are very hard to train, we decided to come up with an acronym for O.W.L. and place it on the return portion of the envelopes with a stamped picture of owls sitting on a tree limb. Just to push the whole owl theme, we cut out small owls with an owl embossing punch, matched them with the invitation color scheme, and tossed a few in the invitation.
Our ceremony programs were also decorated with an owl, to carry the theme through to the ceremony. We also incorporated love letters from classic writers and composers (I’m a writing major in college and Justin loves classical music) and added favorite lines from my favorite romantic comedy, “You’ve Got Mail” (which is representative of how we met – online).
Ceremony: Storybook Love
We chose the Grand River Chapel at William Jewel because it was charming and reminded us of the small chapels in storybooks where fairytale marriages happened.
Since the setting of our reception was an enchanted forest, and my favorite color is purple, it made sense to choose purple for the bridesmaids’ dresses. The men wore black tuxes with green sprays on their lapels. Even our mothers kept the color scheme going.
Our vows were traditional, but we also opted to say something personal to one another. As a surprise to each other, Justin recited “I carry your heart” by E.E. Cummings and I recited “How do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The poetry was probably less a surprise for Justin (living with a writer almost guarantees some poetry somewhere in life), but I was completely blown away. The memory still brings tears to my eyes.
The ceremony was beautiful and we were extremely happy with the beginning of our fairytale day – a love story for the books.

My name is Sonya Dunham and on June 11, 2011 I had the wedding of my dreams and married my Prince Charming, Justin Dunham. The vision of our wedding day started after the proposal, as I imagine is the same for many brides. We knew that we wanted a themed wedding and that it really had to do with love stories, fairytales, and magic.
As often happens with us, Justin was off making money to pay for the wedding while I was left to dream the biggest dream possible for our day. I often think of Cinderella when I hear “fairytale wedding,” and that vision is very beautiful. But, I wanted something different, quirky but relatable without being cliché. I wanted every fairytale wedding possible, all the themes, all the love stories – everything. In spirit, for the wedding, I understood Veruca Salt – I wanted it all.
I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it, so I immediately started my research on weddings. Thanks to Peter Merry’s book “The Best Wedding Reception Ever!” I realized that if I wanted a truly fairytale day, I would have to hire the best wedding innovators in my area.
Once I secured true visionaries to be a part of our wedding team, we had to figure out the base of the theme. Since I didn’t want the Cinderella fairytale route, we decided to go with the enchanted forest/Alice in Wonderland path, with other movie, book, and favorite show themes.
With something as complex as this, a wedding planner was definitely a good addition to our wedding family. In the beginning, the whole theme idea, and cohesiveness, was lost on everyone but us, our florist, and our planner. Thankfully, the key team knew what was going on.
To be continued….
What a wonderful event – the KC Weddings Bridal Spectacular! Mr. & Mrs. was there to give couples a taste of our Wedding Library and Floral & Details Design as well as a chance to meet our consultant, Jen to start talking WEDDING! Lots of couples took advantage of becaming members of Mr. & Mrs. while at the show. For those still looking to make your planning journey fun and less overwhelming, shoot us an email at Info@MyMrandMrs.com or give us a call at 913-322-3223 to set up a time to get to know each other! One thing we kept hearing over and over from couples is how relieved they felt after becoming a Mr. & Mrs. Couple, knowing they will be guided through every step – no more guesswork and stress!
So now what do you do with all of that info after the bridal show?
There are a few things you will want to do to maximize your success with all of those business cards, brochures and info you gathered! A bridal show can be a helpful, but very overwhelming place to start your planning process. Here are the steps we recommend to keep the stress level low :
Get Organized!
Dump out that bag of goodies you received and organize your info into categories, first by vendor (photography, venue, catering, floral, cake, music, etc). Then take a look at each, as well as any notes you made to remember who you loved chatting with. Ask yourself a few questions – Was their booth impressive and professional? Did they offer lots of helpful information tailored to my wedding? And most importantly, did you have a connection with this vendor and did they seem genuinely excited about you and your wedding? Then, look up their website and reviews on WeddingWire.com or chat with Jen, the Mr. & Mrs. Consultant to make sure they are reputable, professional and amazing vendors you can trust.
Contact Them!
Choose your top 2-3 in each category and give them a call or email them. Set up a time to meet them to talk about your wedding details so they can create a custom quote for you. Remember, if you are a Mr. & Mrs. couple, Jen can make these appointments for you and you can meet all of your Mr. & Mrs. Wedding pros in our ultra-convenient Consultation Suites to maximize your time. When you are on the phone with your vendors, first ask them if they have your date available. You can take the time to give them a bit of info about your wedding and see if you feel that spark of chemistry. During your consultation, be sure to take your Mr. & Mrs. Bridal Binder with you to guide you through the consultation, know exactly what questions to ask and to keep all of your info organized.
